Life often unfolds in ways we never expect, sometimes as a bed of roses, and other times, as a bed of thorns. As children, many of us envision grand futures with careers, homes, and stability. But as Ecclesiastes 9:11 reminds us, “Time and chance happen to us all.” While not everyone will endure financial highs and lows, challenges of one kind or another are inevitable.

My personal challenge came in the form of financial instability. Despite meticulous planning and saving, I lost two jobs within two years—a humbling twist of time and chance that shattered my financial framework. Overnight, I found myself moving from the security of a stable income to the uncertainty of no income at all.
Initially, I coped well. In the first 30 to 90 days, my savings and optimism carried me. But as my financial reserves dwindled and I dipped into retirement savings meant for my future, my emotions grew turbulent. Survival had replaced security, and hope felt tenuous. Yet, during this low, I turned to the wisdom of history for reassurance.
The stock market, with its sharp drops and roaring recoveries, became a metaphor for my life. History has shown that even the deepest recessions and bear markets don’t last forever; resilience eventually wins out. Likewise, no rollercoaster stays down perpetually—whether it’s financial struggles or personal hardships, the pendulum always swings both ways.

If you or someone you love is facing financial difficulties, remember this: the lows, while painful, are not permanent. The pendulum can just as easily swing towards prosperity and joy. Equip yourself with knowledge, build your financial intelligence, and trust in the resilience of time. Both challenges and opportunities come with the passage of time—and with them, the chance for recovery and growth.
Life is a series of ups and downs, guided by time and chance. No matter how low the rollercoaster dips, remember: you have the strength to rise again.
